Mesclat

"Matances" (slaughter), a traditional ritual of the Mallorcan winter and a gastronomic celebration of Mallorcan cuisine.

Mesclat is the star drink at the festivities (Patrona) in Pollença, which commemorate the confrontation between Moors and Christians every year:

The battle on 30 May 1550, in which the Christians, led by Joan Mas, won the victory over the Turkish pirates led by the fearsome Dragut.

"Mare de Déu dels Àngels, assistiu-mos. Pollencins, aixecau-vos, que els pirates ja són aquí!"

"Our Lady of the Angels, assist us. Pollencins, get up, the pirates are already here!"

The Patrona takes place every year from the end of July to the beginning of August in Pollença, culminating on 2 August when the battle is re-enacted with thousands of participants.
